Engaging and enjoyable Western mash up with dragons instead of horses. Dragon Grit 1, from the classic Western opening, does all the heavy lifting that a first issue should do. The situation is set up, the story line is established, and the announcement of trouble for issue 2 is made.
Loreli Jonason and Caleb Palmquist know how to use Western tropes with economy and craft. There is sufficient story delivered to engage the reader. Any Western fan will be happy that they are in safe hands and be happy to sink into the story and want to see what happens next.
Kay Wollhiser’s art is a pleasure to read. Where needed, as in the opening sequence, it is cinematic. The quieter moments are clear and inviting. The cast move with confidence, their body language, and facial expressions are clear. The dusty tones in the colouring bring the landscape and context to life in a suitably Western way.
With the lettering Dave Lentz is easy to read and it blends into the story, never drawing attention to itself. It allows the story to unfold with confident ease.
